Dedication. Courage. Passion.

The Boston Marathon is the world's oldest annual marathon and ranks as one of the world's most prestigious road racing events. Our Boston Marathon has distinguished itself as the pinnacle event within the sport of road racing by virtue of its traditions, longevity, and method of gaining entry into the race.

On April 15, 2013, there was a domestic terrorist attack during the annual Boston Marathon that resulted in the deaths of three people. As a result of the tragedy, A Leg Forever Charitable Foundation was founded to honor brothers J.P. Norden and Paul Norden, whom each lost a leg in the second blast. Every year, this amazing and unique charity helps amputees thrive. With the 10th anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombing approaching, 10 amazing marathoners are dedicating their hearts, minds, and legs to help amputees and A Leg Forever.

Team A Leg Forever

Bridget Halpin

My name is Bridget Halpin and I am running the Boston Marathon to honor and pay tribute to all those who were impacted by the tragic Boston Marathon bombing in 2013.

I was just 12 years old when the bombing occurred, but from that moment on, I knew I wanted to pursue a career in public service to protect my community. 12 years later, I am so honored to have been selected to run on behalf of A Leg Forever Foundation.

Through this cause, A Leg Forever runs on behalf of those who can't at the moment.

We carry their names every mile and we do it so the people we support never truly stop running in the race of life.

By running for this cause I hope to bring awareness and inspiration to those going through the hard times of becoming an amputee so that one day they can get up and get back in the race.

Hannan Mackey

My name is Hannan Mackey and I am running the Boston Marathon for A Leg Forever to honor those in need of a prosthetic leg.

My uncle, Dave Mackey, lost his leg in a traumatic running accident and is back competing as an elite para-athlete. I am inspired by his perseverance and courage, and want to support others like him!

Mary Walsh

I am so honored to be running the 129th Boston Marathon with A Leg Forever Foundation! This will be my first marathon and being a member of this team personally means so much to me.

My Grandfather became a leg amputee after developing a rare cancer from exposure at Ground Zero.

Seeing what he had to go through has inspired me to want to help others who require the help of a prosthetic.

Mona Ascha

My current and past work in the trauma, burn, and critical care units at MetroHealth hospital has shown me the resilience and strength required for patients with limb loss to rebuild their lives.

My background as a plastic surgeon and experience in targeted muscle reinnervation (TMR) surgery allows me to directly support these individuals by improving myoprosthetic control and reducing phantom limb pain. My research on TMR reflects my commitment to advancing care for patients with limb loss.

My role in the medical industry with Checkpoint Surgical—whose nerve stimulators are essential during TMR—has deepened my understanding of the resources required to support these patients.

Running for ALF allows me to actively contribute to a cause that aligns with my professional expertise and personal commitment to enhancing the quality of life for those impacted by limb loss. I am excited to represent this foundation, honoring the resilience of patients with limb loss and helping to provide the support they deserve on every step of their journey.

Penny Wilbanks

50-state marathoner

Penny Wilbanks

I am running for the Charity "A Leg Forever" because I know firsthand how expensive prosthetics can be. One of my ole' running buddies, David, told me teary eyed when he was unable to complete a half marathon, that he wished he could afford the legs that would allow him to actually run, and go that distance without blisters forming. I always remembered that conversation and wished I had been able to help him more and find a way to help afford him a new pair of legs. Unfortunately he passed away in 2021 due to covid but since then I have made new running friends that are amputees. I have run a marathon in all 50 states and one of my traveling buddies, Peggy, is also doing the states, her 30 year old daughter, Anna, lost all 4 of her limbs when she became ill and in the hospital  and got sepsis and that was the only way they could save her life. I met another running friend VanGregory that lost his legs in the great Texas freeze of 2021 and now he is an avid runner AND rock climber. Then on Valentines day 2023, one of my regular running buddies, Richard, lost his legs in an 18 wheeler truck accident.. He's slowly coming around but not quite ready to hit the trails just yet.  With so many of my friends in the running community needing prosthetics, I figured this was the best charity to get behind, to help folks living in the same situation in Massachusetts.

Zelia Magliozzi

6th year with ALF

Zelia Magliozzi

I’m running the Boston Marathon for the 8th consecutive year, and for the 6th time with the A Leg Forever Foundation. I feel incredibly honored to be part of this amazing organization, which is dedicated to helping amputees in need of prosthetic limbs and support.

Giving back to this community through fundraising and raising awareness feels like a way of paying it forward and showing gratitude for the strength and resilience of those who face challenges every day.

Another reason I’m running with A Leg Forever is that I believe in their mission to not only provide assistance with the physical tools for independence but also to support the everyday needs and emotional well-being of those navigating life after limb loss. This foundation doesn’t just change lives — it helps restore hope and dignity to those who need it, and that’s why I continue to be involved.

Every year we host a Boston Marathon team to represent and raise funds for A Leg Forever, however, every year it varies how many bibs the B.A.A. allows. Thank you for your continued support of Our ALF Marathoners!
